Description
Sharks are one of the only animals to have survived four of the five mass extinctions. Studies show that sharks play a key role in maintaining the health of coral reefs. A team of Australian scientists found where there were healthier reefs, there were also a high number of sharks present. They control the mid-sized predators which allows the small reef fish to thrive and take care of the actual corals. Fun Fact: Sand sharks actually fart! They gulp air at the surface which they then 'release' to achieve greater depths and are the only sharks that do this.
